Developing M2M solutions involves working in a lot of domains and most of the things are not in your control. Its hard to fathom the complexity of development at first. As you start working towards the solution, there are many stumbling blocks and answers are hard to find. As there is little info shared online, mostly because solutions are proprietary, it is very difficult to start.
As usual clients generally expect every feature to be present there at zero cost. ^_^
I agree with you that M2M space is not fully understood by the industry. We from ConnectM have been in M2M space since almost 5 years and have eventually developed a range of solutions and a robust platform which is plug and play across industries. Having done so much development, we still have loads to learn and re-engineer the solution for other domains.
Clients always look at cost optimisation.
But what I feel is, M2M shall gather much more pace in the coming days.
Hope to have more discussion with you!
Have a nice day!

Through the years we have developed a robust M2M platform which can connect to various applications and devices.

Below are my co-ordinates.
In my opinion, "Nice to have" vs "Must have" depends on the type of problem you are trying to solve. It's really a Cost vs Benefit relation.
If it's a small problem for your customer then it's just a "Nice to have", and therefore they won't pay for a fancy M2M solution.
If the customer's problem is a huge one, then it becomes a "Must have" and most likely will be willing to consider an investment in a M2M solution to solve it.
Agree with alot of the posters here. I think though in this changing environment "Nice to haves" can become "Must haves" and vice versa quite quickly.
Having view on where things might be going may reduce the complexity/lead times/costs in changing something into a "Must have".
